Unlike sewing needles, felting needles are made with a sharp point and barbs along the shaft. The needles are used to compress loose wool into a specific shape by repeatedly stabbing the wool. With each stab, the barbs of the needle catch the wool fibres and compress them together. This causes the wool fibres to tangle and knot together in a dense shape.
The 38 gauge star needle is an excellent medium needle for all round needle felting. With four working edges to the star shape, the needle picks up more fibres, which means faster felting. A perfect choice for building shapes quickly, and smooth surface finishing with fine detail. Supplied in a pack of 10.
Felting Needle Sizes
The size and thickness of a needle is measured by its gauge. Low gauge (thicker) needles are ideal for coarser wools and leave more visible puncture marks. Higher gauge needles (finer) are better for finer wools and smooth finishing detail.
Gauges 19, 20 & 32 best for coarser wool
Gauge 36 multi-purpse and ideal for beginners
Gauge 38 multi-purpose for finer finishing
Gauge 40 the finest for precise, smooth finish
Felting Needle Shapes
Triangular: standard, multi-purpose needles with three working sides.
Star: four working sides with more barbs for faster felting.
Spiral: twisted with three working sides for smooth finishing
Reverse: barbs in opposite direction for pulling surface fibres out.
Felting Needles: 38 Gauge Star Pack of 10
These needles are strong, rigid and very sharp. Make sure that the needle is stabbed into the wool with a straight in and out motion. Do not bend the needle when felting, as this will cause breakages. Not suitable for children under 12. We recommend that this product is used under adult supervision.
